Tips New Homeowners Can Use to Maintain Their Home’s Heating System

After new homeowners settle into their new homes, they often want to enjoy those dwellings for a while before having to worry about time-consuming and costly home repairs. They especially may want to make sure their furnaces work reliably. Learn some maintenance tips you can use to take the best care of your new home’s heating system.

Replace the Filters

Even if the former homeowner said they changed the air filters before moving out, put in new air filters yourself. Clean air filters ensure your heating system blows out clean air and works efficiently.

After you install the new filters, change them every two to three months to keep your system working reliably and efficiently. If you have dogs or cats in your home, you may need to change the air filters every 30 to 60 days to prevent pet hair from clogging them.

Clean the Vents and Registers

Clean the vents and registers in your new home every few months as well. Use a vacuum cleaner attachment with a brush to remove dust and dirt. Sweep the return air vent to remove debris on it.

Listen for Unusual Noises

As your heater runs, listen for it to make unusual noises. Sounds like banging, grinding or whistling indicate a problem with its motors or other internal components. For example, moving parts in the motor might need lubricating. The fan blades may also be off balance and need adjusting.

Inspect and Seal the Ductwork

Check the ductwork to your home’s heating system. Make sure it is properly attached and none of it is loose. If you see damage like holes and cracks, use mastic or foam tape to seal them. Replace ductwork that is heavily damaged and beyond repair.

Install a CO Detector

If your furnace uses natural gas or propane, install a CO detector in your home. Check to make sure it works, and change its batteries twice a year.

Inspect the Flue and Chimney

nspect the flue and chimney in your heating system to prevent the risk of carbon monoxide buildup in your home. Make sure the chimney does not have debris like twigs or birds’ nests in it. Ensure that the flue is free of carbon buildup and that the pilot has a blue flame.

Schedule Yearly Tune-Ups

Schedule professional heating system tune-ups at least once a year. This upkeep identifies and resolves small problems so that they don’t become larger and pricier ones. It also ensures that moving parts are properly lubricated, the furnace does not leak gas, and your system uses energy efficiently.

These practical tips help new homeowners maintain the heating systems in their homes in Fort Pierce, FL. Contact NisAir Air Conditioning when you need heating repair.
